Paul Backstrom

Paul L. Backstrom, 92, of West Newton, died Monday, December 28, 2020. Born in Collinsburg on September 26, 1928, he was the son of the late Thomas and Magdalena (Hofmann) Backstrom.
Paul worked in maintenance for Fort Pitt Steel, Westinghouse Air Brake and the Westmoreland County Courthouse. He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in West Newton, the VFW and the American Legion. He was the oldest member of and was instrumental in organizing the Turkeytown Fire Department. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Emily (Steadman) Backstrom; daughters, Paula (Alexander) Ustazewski of Irwin and Lana (Raymond) Baker of West Newton; grandchildren, Paul (Danielle) Baker, Dr. Heather Momyer (Anthony Costa), Stephanie (Robert) Phillips, Rachelle (Jason) Scott and Karri Momyer (David Warner); great-grandchildren, Emily (Nathan) Everly, Raymond Baker, Jasiah Jones, Anna Scott, Magdalena Jones, Alana Jones, Tyler Scott, Victoria Scott and Sarah Warner; sister, Vae Krawczyk of Parma, OH; brother, Thomas (Elaine) Backstrom of Rostraver; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard, Leonard and Donald Backstrom; and sister, Daryle Aspray.
Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, private Funeral Services and interment will be held at the convenience of the family.
