Betty Mae Opfer

Betty Mae Smart Opfer, 91, of Forward Township, passed away at the Goodwill Mennonite Nursing Home on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Born in Elizabeth Township on May 31, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Schwerian) Smart.

A beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Betty enjoyed spending winters in Florida, as well as camping and campfires with her children and grandchildren. She liked trout fishing at the family camp in McKean County, PA.

She was a hummingbird whisperer; they flocked to her feeders. She made over 100 "Quillows" and gave them away to family and friends.

Betty is survived by her son, Louis (Michele) Opfer of Garrett County, Maryland; daughter, Rhonda (John) Beadling of Fairhope PA; brothers Thomas (Lenore) Smart and Ron (Marilyn) Smart of Ohio; grandchildren Brian (Jaime) Opfer of Garrett County, Maryland, Sheila (Bert George) Beadling of Olympia, Washington and Paulette (John) Lint of Olympia, Washington; and great grandchildren, Kara Opfer, Violet George & Josephine George.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Ernest Leslie Opfer in 2019.
