George Almasi

George Almasi, 82, of Rostraver Township, formerly of Monessen, died Monday, April 10, 2017 in The Residence at Hilltop. Born in Monessen on April 27, 1934, he was the son of the late Charles and Mary (Grados) Almasi, Sr.
George served his country in the US Air Force during the Korean War. He worked as an electrical draftsman at Westinghouse Electric Corp. for 22 years. In the early 1960s, he began pursuing his avocation as the host of a Polka show at radio station WESA in Charleroi. For 50 years, George was in the Polka business and was crowned "Polka King of the Valley". George was the District Manager for US Rep. Don Bailey from 1979 to 1983 and served as his Deputy Auditor General from 1985 to 1989. He also worked as Personnel and Labor Relations Director in Westmoreland County from 1983 to 1985, and retired in September 1997 as Director for Veterans Homes with the PA Veterans Affairs Bureau. For his worked in public service, George was awarded two Pennsylvania Commendation Medals from the Department of Military Affairs; the highest medals in the state awarded to a civilian. He was a member of the Church of St. Anne in Rostraver, the Monessen Knights of Columbus and the Croatian Fraternal Union.
He is survived by his sisters, Jo Anne (Steve) Dury of Lorain, OH and Dolores Almasi of Rostraver Township; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles and John Almasi; and sister, Mary Almasi.
Friends will be received on Monday, April 17 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the James C. Stump Funeral Home Inc., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934) www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com where a Blessing Service will be held on Tuesday, April 18 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Anne, Rostraver Township, with Rev. Vincent J. Gigliotti as celebrant. Interment, with Military honors, will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Rostraver Township.
