James W. Russell Jr., 73, formerly of Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania, passed away on May 8th, 2026 in Fuquay Varina, North Carolina. Born December 13, 1952 in Charleroi, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James W. Russell Sr. and Theresa (Coreau) Russell.
Jim began his college career at University of South Alabama after being recruited for the baseball team as a 3rd baseman, outfielder, and power hitter. He completed his college degree at California University of PA, then began his career as a food service director.
Jim had a lifelong passion for sports and athletics with baseball, basketball, football, and golf interwoven throughout his story. It all began with his own participation as a little league teammate after being inspired by his father's career in the MLB. Jim transitioned easily into coaching baseball and golf at Belle Vernon Area High School, where he valued making an impact on the athletic career of others for over ten years. He is remembered by his teammates and players as "larger than life" and "fun to be with." Jim concluded his involvement with athletics as a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers fan along with the title of his grandchildrens' #1 fan.
Jim also enjoyed spending time in nature, family vacations, theme parks, history, cooking, and hosting gatherings for friends and family. Despite his success in sports, Jim's greatest love was for his role as a father and grandfather.
Jim is survived by his four children, James (Stephanie) Russell IV, Ryan (Tracey) Russell, Nolan (Audrey) Russell, and Megan (Jason) Krusienski; his seven grandchildren; and sister, Janet Russell.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Stephen V. Russell.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. in the James C.
