Ruth Backstrom

Ruth E. (Skurka) Backstrom, 81, of Collinsburg, passed away on Friday, September 22, 2017 in Golden Heights Personal Care Home. Born in McKeesport on August 15, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John and Ruth (Crosser) Skurka.
Ruth graduated from McKeesport Technical High School in 1954. She worked for the Westinghouse Credit Corporation in Pittsburgh from 1954 to 1961. In 1974 she went to work for Ekves Service Center and worked there for 16 years. She then worked at the Smithton Truck Stop and Perkins Restaurant for 10 years. Ruth enjoyed volunteering for the Rostraver Girl Scouts, the Collinsburg VFC Ladies Auxiliary and the Methodist Women's Group. She also enjoyed playing canasta with her card club friends for over 50 years.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Louisa Backstrom; daughter, Pamela Backstrom; sister, Joanne McLay; as well as several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William E. Backstrom.
Friends will be received on Friday, September 29, 2017 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the James C. Stump Funeral Home Inc., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934) www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com Additional viewing will take place in the funeral home on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. and the Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
Following the interment, a Funeral Luncheon will be held in the Collinsburg Volunteer Fire Hall, 514 Rostraver Drive, West Newton, PA.
