Walter Anthony Painter, 90, of Donora, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, storytelling, and deep devotion to his family. Born on April 2, 1936, in Webster to Odell and August Painter, Walt was a man who truly loved life and everyone in it!
He could talk to anyone whether they wanted to hear his thoughts or not. Walt honorably served his country in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Walt's greatest love story began over 64 years ago when he married his beloved wife, Joan Louise Ferguson. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around family, adventure, and companionship. Walt loved to travel and who lived for vacations, especially cruises and amusement parks. He was looking forward and so excited for his 12th cruise this coming June, and though he missed that final voyage, his family takes comfort in the countless memories made on past journeys and vacations. For many years, Mountain Pines was Walt's second home. He loved riding around the campground on his golf cart, playing cards, and eating mountain pies at campfires with friends. Walt spent hours doing woodwork and painting it, which he proudly sold to fellow campers at Mountain Pines.
At home, Walt could be found watching his favorite TV shows and always telling stories of his life experiences. His family is currently working on a book which contains all the stories Walt once told per to his request. He enjoyed relaxing, swaying on his swing with his two loyal dogs, Mindy and Lacey. Walt loved food, but always enjoyed his regulars, which consisted of morning breakfast of eggs and fried potatoes, and always requested fried chicken breast and real mashed potatoes. Even as his health declined, Walt maintained his spirit. No matter the struggle, whenever anyone asked how he was doing, his favorite response was always "I'm fine" Walt was a selfless person and never wanted anyone to worry about him. Walt's legacy lives on through his large and loving family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Joan Louise Painter; his four children, listed from oldest to youngest: Sherrie, Joseph, Donald and Brian (wife Lynn); his five grandchildren: Stephen, Sean (wife Nicole and her children Blake and Olivia) and Anna (children of Sherrie) and Vanessa and Kaylie (children of Brian). They will live on to tell the story of the remarkable Walter Painter.
In addition to his parents, Walt was preceded in death by his brothers, Carl Painter, Rupert Painter, Ruben Painter and August Painter Jr.; and sisters, Ruth Creevey, Eva Bedner, Catherine Ashbaugh and Betty Lou Tineri.
