Anna (Tamasy) Donohoe

December 6, 1922 ~ December 30, 2020 (age 98)

Obituary

Anna Tamasy Donohoe, 98, of West Newton, Pennsylvania, passed away Wednesday, December 30th, 2020, as a result of Covid-19.  She was the daughter of the late Barney J. Tamasy, Sr. and Mary Hlafcsak of West Newton, PA, who both immigrated to the United States from the Austria/Hungary and Czechoslovakia regions. Anna was the last surviving member of their family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dan, in 1984 and five brothers and four sisters (Mary (Boyd), Julia (Grinarmal), Pauline, Barney Jr., Paul, Joseph, Martin, Irene (Shoaf) and Thomas).  She is survived by six sons Thomas (Cathie) of Jeannette, PA, Daniel (Linda) of Pittsburgh, PA, Patrick (Leslie) of West Newton, PA, Dr. Michael (Cathy) of New Market, MD, Paul (Lindy) of Westminster, MD, John (Adriana) of Frankfurt, Germany, and daughter Mary Evans (Tom) of Rostraver Township, PA.  She had thirteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren (with the 9th due March, 2021).  Like many other 1st generation American families of the southwestern Pennsylvania region, Anna grew up in a large, low income family. She understood the value of hard work at a very early age. During WWII, while her brothers were in the service fighting for their country, Anna helped in her father’s growing plumbing business by doing various jobs and even driving the large company truck hauling pipe and other commercial materials.  After the war, she went on to earn her degree as a Registered Nurse (RN) and worked for the next 40 years at Frick Hospital’s Emergency Room in Mt. Pleasant, PA and Mount Vernon Personal Care Home in Elizabeth, PA.  During her career, Anna was known to be a comforting nurse showing kindness to all the patients under her care. She stayed active well into her retirement by volunteering when needed and maintaining a professional network of fellow nurses through annual luncheons and other activities. She enjoyed traveling across the United States, Canada, and Europe with her sister, Irene, and could often be found with friends at a weekly card game with the New Society at St. Anne’s Church. Her work ethic and dedication to her profession were an inspiration to her family and anyone who knew her. Known as ‘Grandma’ by her grandchildren, she was the person at family events they wanted to share a beer with, talk about old times and sharing her wisdom. She enjoyed sitting on her front porch overlooking the vista of West Newton and the colors of the changing seasons.  She will be loved and missed by her family and friends.

Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, private funeral services and internment were held at the convenience of the family.
