George R. Sweeney II, 86, of Rostraver Township, died Wednesday, April 5, 2017 in Mon Valley Hospital.  Born in West Newton on August 26, 1930, he was the son of the late John F. and Anna A. (Accipiter) Sweeney.

George worked retail grocery and was a self-employed businessman.  He was a founding member of REMS and served on the Board of Mon Valley Hospital for 16 years.  He was a member of AMVETS Post 103 Hopwood and the Church of St. Anne.  He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corp League of Greensburg.  He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Norma Jean Yakubic Sweeney; sons, John F. (Christy) Sweeney, Sr. of South Huntingdon, Patrick R. Sweeney of Dilliner, PA and Michael T. (Laurie) Sweeney, Sr. of North Huntingdon; daughter, Anna Marie Sweeney of Belle Vernon; grandchildren, Lauren, Catherine (Vincent) DeRose, Lindsay, Michael J. (Nicole), John F. Jr., David, Rose, Ryan and Renee; great grandchildren, Olivia DeRose and Max Dansro; brother, Matthew W. (Eileen) Sweeney; and his niece and caregiver, Tamy Sweeney.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, George R. Sweeney Jr.; grandson, Michael T. Sweeney Jr.; great grandson, Angelo DeRose; brother, Patrck J. Sweeney Sr.; and sister Patricia Sweeney.

Friends will be received on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. in the James C. Stump Funeral Home Inc., 580 Circle Drive, Belle Vernon/Rostraver Township (724-929-7934) www.jamesstumpfuneralhome.com where a Blessing Service will be held on Monday at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. in the Church of St. Anne, Rostraver Township.  Interment, with Military honors, will follow in West Newton Cemetery.
